FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Three IPT Bulls Produced by the Illinois State Fair Grand Champion Performance Cow

One of the highlights of the Illinois State Fair Junior Show is the selection of the "Performance Cow-Calf." Not only are premiums higher than any other class in the Junior Show but the "Silver Punch Bowl" is the most impressive and expensive award given at the Illinois State Fair.

The Performance Cow-Calf Class was initiated by a long time supporter of Performance Testing in Illinois and this was the late Fred Killiam of Jacksonville. Currently the Award at the Illinois State is called the "Fred J. and Bev Killiam Memorial Performance Cow-Calf Class." Their son Bill Killiam is currently very involved in supporting and overseeing that this prestigious award continues into the future.

Tom Saxe, retired Animal Systems Educator for southern Illinois helped develop the guidelines for this award. Judging of the class involves more than just phenotypic evaluation of the pair but this must be combined with the cow's performance information. Tom has developed a "Performance Card" that must be verified and is given to the exhibitor after they are in the show ring and the exhibitor presents it to the judge.

The judge collects all the cards for a class and uses them to make his placing and also uses the performance information to justify his placing. Thus, this class is just what it is called "Performance Cow-Calf Class.

You might wonder why all the above information? The reason is that the 2012 Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale has three bulls selling that are offspring from previous winners of the ISF Performance Cow-Calf Show.

The lots include the following….

Lots 32 & 60 - In Catalog listed as Can Am Cattle Company
but the:
- Breeder and Owner of bull - Austin Rincker, Moweaqua
- 2003 Illinois State Fair Grand Campion Cow-Calf Pair
- Austin is the son of Irl and Anne Rincker of Shelbyville.

Lot 42 - In Catalog listed as Hobbs Angus but the:
- Breeder and Owner of Bull - John Mitchell McEwen, Bushnell
- 2011 Illinois State Fair Grand Champion Cow-Calf Pair
- John is son of Brian and Cherish McEwen of Bushnell and grandson of Bud and Deb Hobbs of Good Hope.

So if you are searching for a herd sire that is backed up by a tremendous dam that has been evaluated for phenotype and performance information, then Lots 32, 42 and 60 might be ones that you should consider. Also, these bulls were bred and are owned by future young Illinois cattlemen.

The Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale will be held at the Illinois State Fairgrounds on Thursday, February 23rd starting at 11:00 am. There are 93 bulls cataloged for the sale consisting of 63 Angus, 24 Simmental, 4 Polled Herefords and 2 Red Angus.
